NBNA Mini Nurse Academy
The Midlands of South Carolina Black Nurses Association Implements
Mini Nurse Academy
The Mini Nurse Academy (MNA) is a community-based initiative of the Midlands of South Carolina Black Nurses Association (Midlands BNA) designed to introduce elementary and middle school students to nursing through engaging, hands-on experiences. The program provides early exposure to nursing and other healthcare careers while fostering health awareness, leadership, confidence, and academic aspiration—particularly among students from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities.
Through interactive activities such as proper handwashing, basic anatomy exploration, and hands-only CPR, students learn how nurses promote individual and community health. The Academy also highlights the power of mentorship by connecting students with licensed nurses and nursing students who serve as relatable role models and trusted guides toward future healthcare careers.
Originally launched as a national initiative by the National Black Nurses Association, Midlands’ Mini Nurse Academy is implemented locally in partnership with Bradley Elementary School. At Bradley, Midlands BNA members facilitate structured sessions that combine career exploration with practical health education, reinforcing academic achievement and self-confidence. The Academy has an annual “graduation” celebration with students and family. Additionally, they are invited to the Midlands Annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon where the program is highlighted.
Through this work, Midlands BNA advances its strategic priorities of leadership, mentoring, and advocacy while strengthening the pipeline of future nurse leaders committed to health equity.
